Healthcare Software Development Company in Chennai

Our engineers in Chennai build software for the city's hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centers, and for overseas health companies that want a Chennai development team. HMS and EHR modules, patient apps, teleconsultation, lab integration and dashboards, designed from the first sprint for ABDM, India's data protection law and, where needed, HL7, FHIR and HIPAA.

What We Build for Hospitals, Clinics and Health Companies

Each module below is custom code written around your workflows, not a resold product. Where you already run something that works, we integrate with it instead of replacing it.

HMS and EHR modules

Registration, outpatient and inpatient flows, orders, billing, pharmacy and discharge, with role-based access and an audit trail behind every clinical edit.

Patient apps and portals

Appointment booking, reports, prescriptions and bills on Android, iOS and web, tied to the patient's hospital record and, when the patient agrees, to their ABHA.

Teleconsultation

Video, audio and chat consults with identity checks, consent capture, e-prescriptions and a complete record of each interaction, built to the national telemedicine guidelines.

Lab and imaging integration

Orders out and results back between your HMS and the LIS or PACS, over HL7 v2 through an interface engine or vendor APIs, with LOINC mapping where your lab supports it.

Dashboards and MIS reports

Occupancy, turnaround time, revenue and referral views for management, run on a reporting copy so dashboards never slow the live system.

ABDM integration layer

ABHA capture and verification, care-context linking and consent-based record sharing, packaged as FHIR R4 documents that follow the national implementation guide.

The engineering practice behind these modules is described on our custom software development page.

Challenges

What ABDM Integration Actually Involves

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission connects patients, facilities and professionals through national registries and a consent layer. Software built for an Indian hospital has to work with all three.

Hospital at the center of connected clinical systems, with failed and working data links between records, scheduling, cloud and partner services

Identity and registries

The ABHA number is a 14-digit identifier that a patient can choose to create, and an ABHA address is an easier-to-remember alias for it. Facilities enroll in the Health Facility Registry, a voluntary national repository covering hospitals, clinics, labs, imaging centers and pharmacies. Doctors register in the Healthcare Professionals Registry.

Your software therefore needs to capture and verify ABHA at registration, store the facility's registry identifier and carry practitioner identities on the records it produces.

Consent-based exchange

When a hospital shares records it acts as a Health Information Provider (HIP); when it requests a patient's history from elsewhere it acts as a Health Information User (HIU). The Health Information Exchange and Consent Manager lets data move only when the ABHA holder consents.

Records travel as FHIR R4 documents defined in the FHIR Implementation Guide for ABDM from NRCeS, version 6.5.0 at the time of writing, using profiles such as OPConsultRecord, DischargeSummaryRecord, DiagnosticReportRecord and PrescriptionRecord.

Integrations are proven in the ABDM sandbox before production; NHA's sandbox documentation for Milestone 3 (version 2.5, March 2025) covers the HIU consent and data-flow APIs. FHIR resource modeling and validation sit with the team behind our HL7 and FHIR integration service.

Overview

Teleconsultation Rules That Shape the Product

India's Telemedicine Practice Guidelines of March 25, 2020 form Appendix 5 of the 2002 professional conduct regulations. The National Medical Commission's 2023 replacement regulations were put in abeyance in August 2023, leaving the 2002 regulations and these guidelines as the reference. Several clauses become product features.

Medical ID card icon for verified practitioner profiles

Registered practitioners only

Platforms must ensure patients consult registered medical practitioners and must show each doctor's name, qualification, registration number and contact details. Doctor onboarding enforces that.

Document icon for teleconsultation records and logs

A digital trail of every consult

Practitioners must keep logs of the interaction, the records used and any prescription issued. Call logs, chat transcripts and documents are stored against the consult.

Checklist icon for e-prescription rules

Prescription limits by consult type

The guidelines group medicines into Lists O, A and B by consult mode and stage, and bar Schedule X and NDPS drugs over teleconsultation. The e-prescription screen applies those rules.

Machine learning icon for doctor-facing decision support

AI supports, the doctor decides

Platforms based on AI or machine learning may not counsel patients or prescribe. Decision-support features we build show suggestions to the doctor, never to the patient.

Security check icon for digitally signed lab and radiology reports

Reports signed after review

An NMC advisory dated October 13, 2026 confirms doctors may authenticate lab and radiology reports remotely by digital signature, provided they reviewed the underlying material. The system records that review before the signature is applied.

For overseas clients, Chennai sits at UTC+5:30 all year and never shifts for daylight saving. A 6:30 pm stand-up in Chennai is 8:00 am in New York and 1:00 pm in London in winter, and 9:00 am and 2:00 pm once both regions move to summer time. US teams may also want our page on healthcare software development in Chicago.

Process

How a Chennai Healthcare Build Runs

Plan your project
  1. 1

    Workflow discovery

Sessions with doctors, nurses, front office and billing staff to document how a patient really moves through your hospital, including the paper forms nobody mentions.

  2. 2

    Standards and data design

Decisions on ABDM scope, FHIR profiles, code systems and the record fields Tamil Nadu regulations expect, made before any screen is drawn.

  3. 3

    Build in short sprints

Working software shown to your users at the end of every sprint, so a missing field turns up in a demo rather than on the ward.

  4. 4

    Sandbox and security testing

ABDM sandbox runs for the integration, plus application security testing and code review by our VAPT team before go-live.

  5. 5

    Go-live and support

Department-by-department rollout, data migration from the previous system, then fixes, updates and new modules after launch.

Tamil Nadu record rules: under the Tamil Nadu Clinical Establishments (Regulation) Rules, 2018, every establishment keeps records of clinical observations, tests, investigations, diagnostic opinion, advice and treatment for each outpatient and inpatient, in Form III. Those fields go into the data model on day one.

Use cases

Who Hires Our Chennai Healthcare Software Team

Multi-specialty hospitals

Replacing a patchwork of billing software and spreadsheets with an HMS that matches their departments, or extending an existing HMS with modules its vendor will not build.

Diagnostic and imaging centers

Report portals, home-collection apps and result delivery linked to ABHA, so patients stop carrying paper reports between doctors.

Clinic groups adding teleconsultation

Consults that follow the guidelines and land in the same patient record as in-person visits.

Overseas digital health companies

US and UK teams that want Chennai engineers on HL7, FHIR and HIPAA-aware product features, working with the brand of a US-incorporated company.

Software vendors seeking NABH recognition

NABH introduced digital health standards for HIS/EMR systems in September 2024, and its clinic management system standards, effective September 17, 2025, require NHA evaluation for ABDM and security before a product applies.

Frequently asked questions

Healthcare Software Development in Chennai: FAQs

Talk to the specialist who would scope the work — not a call-centre script.

Ask us directly
What does it cost to build healthcare software with a Chennai team?

It depends on the modules, integrations, user numbers and whether ABDM or HIPAA work is in scope. We do not publish price lists. After a discovery session you receive a written estimate per module, so the build can be phased. Integrations with third-party systems and migration from old software are usually the largest variables.

Is ABDM integration mandatory for private hospitals?

No national rule forces it: ABDM's guide calls facility registration voluntary, and creating an ABHA is the patient's choice. Even so, NABH's digital health standards for hospitals include objectives for capturing ABHA and linking reports to it, and its clinic software standards require NHA evaluation for ABDM before certification.

What is the difference between an HMS, a HIS and an EHR?

The terms overlap. A hospital management system (HMS) or hospital information system (HIS) usually covers registration, billing, pharmacy, inventory and administration, while an electronic health record (EHR) holds the clinical record: notes, orders, results and prescriptions. Many hospitals buy them as one suite; we build or extend either side.

Can you build a telemedicine app that follows Indian guidelines?

Yes. We build teleconsultation with practitioner verification, patient identification, consent capture, e-prescriptions that respect the guideline medicine lists and a full digital trail of each consult. Clinical responsibility stays with the registered practitioner, and AI features only support the doctor, as the guidelines require.

Do you take on overseas clients from Chennai?

Yes. Xcodefix Global belongs to Xcodefix Inc, which is incorporated in Delaware, and its delivery teams are in Chennai and Coimbatore. Overseas clients get a daily overlap window, video reviews and written sprint reports. For US work we build to HL7 and FHIR and design around HIPAA safeguards.

Will the software follow the DPDP Act?

We design for it: purpose-specific consent notices, access controls, encryption, activity logs and deletion workflows. Most obligations under the DPDP Rules 2025 start around May 13, 2027, including one-year log retention and 72-hour breach reports to the Data Protection Board. Our DPDP compliance team can review policies alongside the build.

Will the new software talk to our current lab or PACS system?

Usually. During discovery we test what your lab or imaging vendor actually offers, whether HL7 v2 feeds, DICOM, a documented API or only database access, and design the new modules around it. Older products sometimes need the vendor's cooperation to open an interface, and we tell you early when that is the case.
